Walking in the rain

Here is the latest. I like the reflections in the rain puddles. I also made the picture frame out of aluminum flashing and attached them with large hex bolts, too fun.

Here is one that I did quickly in one evening. I just wanted to sit down and see what I could do with a specific color pallet. It is acrylic on canvas.

I really wanted to try some projects with a little scale, and this is my first attempt. This is painted on a 1 1/2'' deep by 36'' x 48'' canvas. It makes a nice accent with the large areas of warm colors in the room.

Here is the latest. It is acrylic paint on canvas. I used brushes, sidewalk chalk, and broccoli to paint with. I am am really pleased with the color scheme.

This is my latest painting. It is done with acrylics on canvas board. I call this piece "Clyfford" after Clyfford Still one of my favorite abstract expressionist painters.

I didn't even know about Clyfford Still until a recent trip to the Smithsonian in Washington DC where I saw one of his paintings (1948-C). his paintings are typically done on very large canvases and caught my eye as soon as I saw it.

Well here it is, my last sketch that I finished before I start studying full time for the CFA level II exam. I started this sketch one night while I was away at an accounting seminar in Las Vegas and just kept adding to it and in the end it made for one interesting piece to look at.

So, farewell for now as I will have to put away my pens and start studying in ernest for my CFA exam in June of 2010, wish me luck.

It is finished! Finally, I feel like it took me a very long time to finish this piece. It is currently hanging at The Lobby in downtown Boise. I painted it on these old wood window shutters that I found at a thrift store. Here are three pictures from different angles.

So, my next project is a painting on some old wooden blinds that I came across. I am painting a big bug eyed fish on it. Here is an ink sketch of such a fish, I hope to finish the painting later this week so that I can have it displayed at The Lobby in Boise as well.

Here are some more animals that I have been playing around with. I think by creating the penguins in different and/or unusual shapes they fit better into my sketches.

Also, on a entirely different note I am going to be displaying some of my work in downtown Boise. I have secured some wall space at The Lobby (opening this Friday) and I am currently working on three multi media projects for it. One of which has been something that I have been wanting to do for some time, I am painting a skate board deck. So, I plan to have the skateboard done this week and will post it here when it is complete, and I expect the other project to come some time after that.

Balloons

I am back!!! Life and work have been very busy lately and I have not been able to post any new stuff in a while. I did manage to find the time to finish this painting for my mother-in-law who was in town to visit the family. This is my first painting that I have done on canvas which I found much easier to work with than my masonite that I have been working with up to this point. What I like about this picture is that it is simple and fun (it is going to be hung in the kids room at grandma's house) but retains some of the elements that I really like about my art, mainly simple shapes arranged in interesting grouping and it gives the sensation of movement. But the best part of this painting is that all of the black balloon strings are actually sewing thread (you can tell from the picture of the back of the painting). It made me more excited to do more paintings on canvas.

I have done more sketching lately so hopefully there will be more posts to come in the near future. Feel free to leave comments to let me know what you think.

This is another of my abstract sketches. Lately I have been obsessed with stained glass windows and I think that shows in this and in Cathedral. I am actually working on painting this sketch in acrylic. Unfortunately, it takes about 10x as long to paint a piece then it does to sketch it out in ink or I would have more paintings of my stuff. My theory on the whole matter is that I am just starting out and I just need to get a lot of sketches done to get better and learn some painting along the way. Of all my abstract stuff I think that this one shows my progress the best, there is more perspective in this sketch and I think that the background and foreground work together more than my previous sketches. I would like to hear what you think!

I started this picture by trying to create a circle using other shapes. After I had sketched it out I thought that it looked something like an Aztec Head Dress, after I was done I also noticed that it looked remarkably similar to Bumble from the Transformers movie. Here is a picture of the original sketch and then the picture in ink marker.

This is a fun picture that I sketched. I got the idea from a picture of curtains in the Architectural Digest magazine. Others have said that it looks like trees, grass, and skinny mountains. I like the color scheme the best.

This is another picture of my square sheep. I have been trying to think of a caption to put onto this picture, but cannot think of anything. Leave a comment and tell me what you think the robots should be saying one to another about the sheep. I was thinking along the lines "Who invited that guy?" or "That's his fourth martini!". Something like that.

This is a sketch that reminded me of a stained glass window. It was another one of my first sketches and I like it a lot. I was thinking about painting it on a canvas but I am having a hard time deciding on what colors to use, if you have any color recommendations let me know.

Perspective Sketch

This sketch is one of my first attempts at a bird's eye view perspective. The sketch took me a little over one hour to make, and as you can see I had already drawn it out once before. I think that I am going to more pictures that incorporate more of a perspective like this one. I enjoyed making it but I am not too happily with the end result, but I think that it is alright for my first attempt.

In the interest of getting some candid feedback on my artwork to date I have befriended a local gallery owner. He was kind enough to let me bring in some of my work and told me what he thought. I got some great feed back and he educated me about how the art world works, what you have to do to have your own showing in a gallery some day, how to get people exposed to your work, and he even pulled out a ruler and showed me how to use horizon lines and vanishing points.

It was great advice and I am planning on incorporating all of it into my work. There are a lot of resources out there to help out emerging artists like myself. I am planning on trying new mediums shortly (acrylic paints on canvas), taking community art courses, possibly painting murals in my garage, and continuing to sketch as much as possible.

I think that it is great that there are so many resources available to a person such as myself who enjoys to create art, and if you feel that there is an artist inside of you, let him out to play.

Sheep, piles of sheep!

I have to give credit to my mother on this one. My mom has always liked landscapes with sheep in them, so she told me to do something with sheep. Well, the result wasn't quite a landscape with sheep grazing in a field, but I thought this is much more fun. This is my first of many sketches with square sheep in them, I am sure you will see many more posts dealing with the adventures of the sheep. I think that my favorite part about the picture is the expressionless faces of the sheep, it seems that even on the verge of abduction they are unfazed. I think this picture would make a fun t-shirt.

This is one of my first sketches. It was inspired by Kofie. What I wanted to draw was a picture that had soft lines and was very fluid. The sketch reminds me of the Japanese flag or someone washing the dirt off of their hands in the sink.
